Dozens of nervous Ma'at Blessed fill the room. I doubt any of them have any reason to worry, but I understand exactly what's going through their heads because I'm feeling it too. The huge scales which dominate the front of the room loom above us, impossible to ignore and even more impossible to forget.

I glance at the spot beside me, surprised that Metjen isn't here already. I know he had some kind of appointment this morning, but it's still strange that he's not already here when it's the Scales Test, probably the most important day of our lives as Blessed.

Especially with everything that's changing between us. We still need to talk about some of the things that are changing, and exactly what they're going to mean, particularly for our living arrangements, but this is the chance for us to find out what our goddess thinks of what's growing between us. If she approves or not will show in her blessings.

Or that's the theory. I'm not sure how true it is, or if the older Blessed just imply it's like that so we all behave more and think twice about fooling around with other Blessed.

A hand reaches out to brush against my arm and I jump slightly.

"Just me," Metjen says, sliding into position beside me and straightening his collar over his bare chest.

"You didn't wear a shirt for your formal wear," I say, unsure where it's coming from or why that's what I'm blurting out.

He chuckles. "Is that really what you're thinking about right now?"

"Sorry, it's just that when we were at the street party, I was thinking that I was disappointed that you were wearing a shirt."

"Well that's something I'm going to remember next time I have to wear formal clothing," he jokes. "I guess we should add something else to our list of things to talk about?"

I bite my bottom lip and nod.

"Okay, we can do that," he responds.

"Really? You're not going to try and argue that we're going too fast?"

"After that kiss in the cupboard? Definitely not. We're going to get through this ceremony, and then we're going to go from there," he says.

The High Priestess' voice rings out through the room as she calls the first Blessed Pair to be judged by the scales, starting the test.

"Your circlet is wonky," Metjen whispers, reaching out to straighten it.

"Thanks," I murmur. "I don't know what to expect from any of this."

Metjen shrugs. "It's going to be okay. We'll see at least one honourable discharge today, but other than that, I don't see anyone being let go."

"Wait, someone's going to get fired?"

He nods. "I heard that Ritho asked to leave the temple earlier this year, she wants to start a family with her husband and wants to dedicate her life to that."

My eyes widen. "I don't know if I could do that."

"She probably didn't either until it was on the table," he points out.

He doesn't say it out loud, but I can hear the additional thought in his head. Maybe
